Hagen has honed his winemaking and leadership skills extensively in the past 6 years, first heading up the winemaking team at Solms-Delta where he enriched his passion for Rhône varietals and expanded his understanding of terroir by working with fruit sourced from several different regions. This finesse earned him recognition with four wines receiving 90+ ratings in Tim Atkin’s South African 2017 Special Report, amongst other achievements. His involvement with the marketing and sales aspects of the business has also contributed to his breadth of knowledge on consumer preferences and brand positioning. After Solms-Delta, Hagen did a short and successful stint as winemaker of Grande Provence, however, he could not pass over the opportunity to join the Zevenwacht team and make wine from its pristine vineyards.
Having worked with the Zevenwacht vineyards previously, he fully appreciates the distinctive qualities of the vineyards and is excited about enhancing the characteristics of Zevenwacht’s wines, especially the super-premium blends to optimise their reflection of these exceptional sites. His expertise with Chenin Blanc will also have a positive impact on our Old Vine Chenin Blanc project.
Hagen, a graduate in Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch, is a talented and passionate winemaker who brings over 12 years’ experience with him. We believe his knowledge, creativity and exceptional palate will positively contribute to the style of the Zevenwacht wines whilst adding a contemporary flair to elevate their recognition to new heights.
Hagen will be supported by winemaker, Charles Lourens and our dedicated cellar staff. The Zevenwacht team looks forward to this exciting new phase.
